Before you can start your jet-setting adventures, make sure you have the right documents! Some of these take a significant time to process, plan accordingly.
Under 18 & flying domestic (within the US):
NO DOCUMENTS NEEDED
Under 2 & flying domestic (as a lap infant):
If you are flying within the country, you actually do not need to pay for a ticket for children under 2. They will be considered a lap infant and will not get their own seat. You may be asked for proof of age - an original or photocopy of a passport, birth certificate, or other government issued ID will work.
Leaving the country:
Even if your child is only 2 months old, you will need a passport for them to travel internationally. Click on the HERE for a free child passport application checklist!
Step 1: Check-In
Immediately upon entering the airpot, you will go to the check-in kiosks. Begin by printing tags you will need for any checked luggage, strollers, or car seats. Most airlines will allow you to check your stroller or car seat for FREE! However, you may choose to bring it with you through the airport. See the video to the right to help you decide what is the best option for you. While at the kiosk, you may also choose to print a boarding pass if you do not already have this digitally. Drop your bags at the check-in counter once you have your tags.
Step 2: Security
After dropping off your luggage, head over to TSA. You may want to consider investing in TSA precheck before your trip. Lines are significantly shorter at major airports and you don't need to unpack your bags as much. The TSA app is incredibly helpful in guiding you through what you can and cannot bring through airport security.
Note that there are different TSA rules when traveling with young children! Research this ahead of time because not all TSA agents are informed on this. SAVE this carousel if you plan on traveling with any form of milk for your child. We have a lot of videos teaching about all things TSA & kids this HERE.
Step 3: Find Gate
Once you make it through security, it's time to do the obligatory "is my gate actually there?" check. Settle in, grab some food, and let your little one get their wiggles out!
Watch this video to help you decide whether a stroller or carrier is better for your airport travel.
Step 4: Board Plane
Listen for the gate agents to call your boarding group and have your boarding pass ready. Families traveling with small children will be given the opportunity to board early, listen for this announcement if this is something you are interested in!
Okay so you made it onto the plane - now what?
